Will I need council approval?
Before you get cracking make sure to contact your council to check if they have any regulations in place. These change by state and territory, by council and by size of the water body so unfortunately there isn’t one simple answer!
What maintenance do ponds require?
This depends if you have fish and lots of temperamental plants in your water garden! Without these, you’ll only need a monthly dose of algae control treatment and clean out of your filter, a bit of leaf maintenance and a thorough clean out at least once a year. Add in fish and plants, and the time and equipment you need depends on the species you have chosen – your local pond shop will be able to talk you through the specific details for whatever you choose.
What about mozzies and pests?
If you have water flow as provided by a pump you won’t have a problem because mozzies can only lay eggs in still, stagnant water. Mozzie larvae feed on algae and other microorganisms. Carrying out regular pond maintenance will help to reduce algae growth. Algae and mozzie control treatments will also help prevent mozzies from breeding.
Aren’t ponds dangerous around kids?
Any water can be hazardous for kids. If you have a young family, or have young kids around regularly you could consider a ‘pondless water feature’ where you get all the benefits of a water garden with no open water.
Electricity and water? Hmmm…
Don’t worry about this – all our pumps are specifically designed to be submersible and completely safe. The electrical components are completely encased in rock hard resin. Just always follow the instruction manual and please don’t undertake any DIY electrical modification to your equipment.
